Military Service Exemption While Living Abroad
Daughter lives with father in Cyprus, mother in Israel. Having a parent in Israel complicates military exemption.
Situation
One of our clients lives with her father in Cyprus, while her mother lives in Israel. The family approached us regarding their daughter's military service exemption.
Complexity
When a child lives abroad but at least one parent resides in Israel, the exemption process becomes significantly more complex.
⚠️ Important: The Israeli army (IDF) conscripts citizens even those living abroad. If one parent is in Israel, standard residence-based exemption does not apply automatically.
Solution
- Preparation per instructions — documents prepared with both parents' participation
- Application filing — submitted a military service deferral request
- Justification — proved the child's primary residence is Cyprus
Result
Despite the mother living in Israel, we received a deferral notification for military service until the daughter begins residing in the country.
✅ Important note: After age 21, military conscription is not applicable. If the daughter does not begin residing in Israel before this age, she will be fully exempt from military service.
